Created Equal Programs

In early March 2015, the Lillie M. Evans Library District will be hosting a series of three programs focusing on the theme, Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle. The programs will be on Tuesdays starting March 3rd and continuing through March 17th, and all programs will be presented at the Princeville Heritage Museum (325 N Ostrom Avenue). Each program will incorporate documentary film clips to encourage community discussion of America’s civil rights history.

Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle is made possible through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The films provided through the grant include: The Abolitionists, Slavery by Another Name, The Loving Story, Freedom Riders, and Freedom Summer. All are available at the LME Library. The goals of the Created Equal grant focus on telling the stories of individuals, creating a deeper understanding of the ways Civil Rights have been obtained, and helping people understand Civil Rights history as central to the American story.

In addition to the Created Equal programs, the LME Library will host a series of video presentations at the Library. All video presentations are part of the Presidential Primary Source Project, a series of free, fifty-minute, interactive video conferencing programs focusing on human and civil rights themes. The Presidential Primary Source Project is a collaboration between the National Park Service, U.S. Presidential Libraries and Museums, other cultural and historic organizations, and the Internet2 community. All programs are free and open to the public. The Lillie M. Evans Library is one of the 473 institutions across the country awarded the Created Equal films and programming grants. Please join us in chronicling the history of the civil rights movement with these special programs and events.

Resources for Book Lovers

Since libraries are all about readers, we have created this page to help book lovers find their next favorite book.  Below are two clickable icons for sites that will help by identify books you’d like to read. 

BookBrowse is a subscription based guide for books that we've purchased for our library cardholders. To access, you just need your LME Library card.  BookBrowse is an online magazine for booklovers - including reviews, previews, "behind the book" back stories, author interviews, reading guides, and much more. BookBrowse seeks out these gems from both established writers and first time authors - novels that whisk you to unfamiliar times and places, thrillers that are more than just 'page-turners', and thought-provoking non-fiction that entertains as it informs.
To use Literature Map, type in an author’s name and this engine will generate a map of read-alike authors. The closer two authors are, the more likely someone will like both of them.  Be sure to vet the authors--sometimes authors someone else may think matches, doesn't necessarily mean you'll see the relationship!	FantasticFiction is the best place to go to find out the titles and order of series.  Say you like James Patterson’s Alex Cross books—which one is the first of the series? FantasticFiction can tell you as well as all Patterson’s other series titles. Entries also include author biographies, books recommended by the authors, and lists of similar authors.

Now that you know what you want to read, how do you find out if we own it?  

By using our library catalog, RSAcat.  The LME Library is a member of the Resource Sharing Alliance which makes it easy for our users to search and to borrow materials from almost 200 libraries in central Illinois. RSAcat is our library online catalog and is how our staff and patron searches for materials in our collection.  RSAcat can be limited to one library or all of the RSAcat When you search for items from our LME Library homepage, materials are first limited to the LME Library collection.

Did you know about LME Library’s book group?

LME Library has an active bookgroup that has been meeting for more than a decade.  It’s called the “Talk About a Good Book” group and we usually meet in person on the last Monday of the month. All our welcome--just stop in to pick up a book!  Information is posted about the books we’re reading on our bookgroup blog or call the library at 385-4540.

http://www.bookgrouponline.com/  BGO is the place for readers to discuss what they’ve read, whether they love it or hate it!  In addition to all things bookish, they also have the Anything But Books area where other media and issues are discussed and games are played.

• Community Food Pantry (for anyone) is housed in the Princeville Presbyterian Church, 339 S. Santa Fe Av., Princeville 385-4402. Distributes 5-6 p.m. every 1st & 3rd Thurs. of the month - totally confidential
• Backpack program for PCUSD #326 school children contact schools PJSHS 385-4660/PGS 385-4994. Students receive a backpack on Fri. (oldest child in family) filled with food & snacks for the wknd.
• Township Supervisor (for those living within each particular township.) has funds to provide some Ameren help, rental aid, help with medications, etc. Princeville is broken into several townships so consult the Village website for supervisor contacts at https://princeville.org/local-government/

Disability Works – Increasing economic opportunities for people with disabilities. They are dedicated to helping you find a rewarding work experience in Illinois. Through Disability Works you can look for a job, find job placement services, find job skills training, or learn about what Illinois community colleges and universities have to offer.

Goodwill Industries – Goodwill shopping is for anyone, regardless of income, who wants to save money. In-store surveys show that people from all walks of life and incomes shop at Goodwill frequently. Plus, they use the proceeds from all their store sales to fund their job training and employment services.

IL AllKids – AllKids is comprehensive healthcare for kids that includes doctors visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, vision care, dental care and medical devices like eyeglasses and asthma inhalers. Parents pay monthly premiums for the coverage, but rates for middle-income families are significantly lower than they are on the private market.

IL Department of Employment Security (Unemployment Office) – IDES is your direct link to Illinois workforce services: job placement and referrals, unemployment insurance, employment and training programs, career and labor market information, payroll tax filing, and more!  

IL Department of Human Services (DHS) – DHS can help meet your basic needs, cope with illness, emergencies, or other challenges to self-sufficiency.

IL FamilyCare – FamilyCare offers healthcare coverage to parents living with their children 18 years old or younger. Monster (Job Site) – Free job search site. Companies post jobs looking for potential employees. You may post your resume free and submit it to employers or allow employers to browse for your resume and contact you. There are several ads on this site that are not always 100% free services. Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. – Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. is a United Way Agency. They provide free legal services to low income persons and senior citizens with civil legal problems. To see if you are eligible for Prairie State’s services, call the office that serves your county:

Salvation Army – The Salvation Army offers seasonal assistance, social services, adult rehabilitation, shelters, feeding programs, disaster relief or child care. The Salvation Army provides help for today's people in need and hope for future generations. They also have retail stores filled with clothes, housewares, furniture, toys and more. Plus they use the proceeds to fund the services they offer.

SeniorNet – SeniorNet's mission is to provide adults 50+ education for and access to computer technologies to enhance their lives and enable them to share their knowledge and wisdom. Courses are offered on a variety of topics from basic computer usage to internet and email training. They also offer courses on digital photography and genealogy. WARNING: CLASSES ARE LOW COST, BUT NOT FREE.

Tax Assistance (Free)–It's your refund. Get it fast. Get it all. The State of Illinois urges you to avoid RALs (Refund Anticipation Loans) and instead chose Illinois E-Filing at www.tax.illinois.gov, and file your federal taxes online at www.irs.gov. Find out more about RALs and how and where to get free tax assistance.

Toys for Tots – The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Visit their site to request toys this Christmas or to find out how and where to donate new unwrapped toys.

Veterans' Employment & Training Service (VETS)– The mission statement for VETS is to provide veterans and transitioning service members with the resources and services to succeed in the 21st century workforce by maximizing their employment opportunities, protecting their employment rights and meeting labor-market demands with qualified veterans today.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) – WIC is a food assistance program for Women, Infants, and Children. It helps pregnant women, new mothers and young children eat well and stay healthy. Who can receive these services?

• Pregnant, breastfeeding or just had a baby
• Infants and Children under 5 years old (including foster children)
• Families with a low to medium income; see the United States Department of Agriculture WIC Income Eligibility Guidelines.

Work 4 Illinois –This links to the State of Illinois web-based electronic hiring system. This system significantly expands access to state employment while increasing transparency, accessibility, accountability, and consistency in the state hiring process. The State provides job opportunities in a wide range of occupations and titles. This website will guide you through the state employment process for the departments under the jurisdiction of the Governor. The State of Illinois is required to comply with certain hiring criteria when selecting individuals for employment.

YMCA – For the past 160 years the Greater Peoria Family YMCA has been a community based service organization dedicated to building the mind, body and spirit for members of the Peoria area community.  By offering value-based programs emphasizing education, health and recreation for individuals regardless of sex, race or socio-economic status.

Like most public libraries, the Lillie M. Evans Library serves homeschool families and educators in our area.  To assist educators and learners with their needs, we have developed a section of our website for our homeschoolers, educators and students.  This page includes links to online resources as well as tips on using the library catalog.  We have persistent links that support areas of curriculum directly into RSAcat, our online catalog.  Finally we have information about any local groups that focus on homeschooling activities.

World Book Kids is the website specially designed just for young students and there are resources for home educators too! Lesson Plans, Science Projects and Common Core Correlations are all at your finger tips. To access your resources click on For Educators then Educator Tools at the bottom of the database. World Book Student is designed for students in upper elementary and middle school. Resources for home educators include Lesson Plans and Common Core Correlations and all are at your finger tips. Tailored for the needs and skills of students in grades 8 and up, World Book Advanced includes a streamlined design, access to historical documents, and important news updates.  The “Take Me To…” feature allows learners to find Pathfinders and Resource Guides.  Also under the “Take Me To...” menu is Teaching with Documents that provides lessons plans for educators. IDNR Field Packs

The LME Library has 2 field packs from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources available for checkout.  These packs are ideal for hands-on exploration of the natural world and circulate for 2 weeks.

One of the librarian's favorite links is for The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (http://www.p21.org/).  P21 is a national  organization that advocates for 21st century readiness for every student. P21 and its members provide tools and resources to help educators keep up by fusing the 3Rs and 4Cs (Critical thinking and problem solving, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity and innovation). 

Local Homeschooling Resources

• ISBE has a page dedicated to answering questions that parents or guardians are often worry about such as following the required laws, filing the correct paperwork, and finding resources to get started. 
• Illinois Virtual School was established in 2001 as the official supplemental virtual learning provider of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and is administered through the Peoria County Regional Office of Education. Working in partnership with public and private schools as well as homeschooled students, IVS offers both classes for students and professional development programs for educators through online web-bases services. 
• APACHE (Association of Peoria Area Christian Home Educators) is a not-for-profit corporation governed by a volunteer board of directors. They are not a membership organization, but instead offer a monthly newsletter, annual convention, used curriculum fair, and various events throughout the year.
• If you are wondering what a typical course of study might look like for your child’s grade, World Book has curriculum guides for preschool to 12th grade. Each grade is broken down by subjects, such as mathematics, language arts and science. (The library subscribes to World Book Online and it is accessible with your LME Library card.)
• Rainbow Resource Center is based out of Toulon, IL, and is an educational resource supply company for homeschoolers.  Their newsletter is available online or by email.  They also have an information page for homeshoolers and live help through their consultants.
