Skeins of Hope Fall 2014

Skeins of Hope 2014 WEB Ad

This is the 3rd year of Lillie M. Evans
Library's Skeins of Hope!!!

We'd like to take a moment to thank all the wonderfully generous people who took the time to make scarves for the Red Scarf Project and items of comfort for the Purple Stitch Project. Our library has donated over 110 items between these two charities. THANK YOU!!!

ProjLinusLogo

PROJECT LINUS is this fall's charity. The library will act as a drop spot for handmade blankets ranging from 36"x36" up to twin bed size (40"x60" is crib size). Blankets may be knit, crocheted, sewn or tied. In addition to completed blankets we will also accept 12"x12" closed weave knit or crocheted squares which we will join to make as many blankets as we can.

******NOTE: Items MUST be from a smoke-free home. Due to the sensitive condition of some of the blanket recipients these blankets cannot be accepted. Unfortunately, laundering does not help. ******

SPECIAL PROGRAM DATES:

Saturday, September 13 @ 10a-Noon: Yarn In! Bring your knit or crochet project to work on in the company of other crafters. Don't know how? We'll be teaching basic crochet to those who want to learn.

Saturday, October 4 @ 10a-Noon: Sew In! There will be a quick and easy jellyroll quilt demonstration by our staff member Sherry. A complete quilt-top can be made in a hour with this method! Bring your own sewing machine and either learn to make a jellyroll quilt top or work on your own quilting project.

Saturday, October 18 @ 10a-Noon: Fun with Fleece! Bring 1⅓ yards (4ft) each of two coordinating fleece fabrics (2⅔ yards or 8 feet total), and a pair of sharp scissors (sewing machine optional) to learn how to make this quick and cute way to make a fun blanket. (Ages 13 and up only please). This is a great intergenerational program; bring your mom, your aunt, your grandmother and work on this project together.

LOCAL CHAPTER NEEDS & INFORMATION:

Each chapter has different rules, needs and recommendations. While they will accept blankets for boys and girls birth though 18 years old the biggest need in our area is blankets for 3-9 year olds (boy and girl) and any age boy prints are always in high demand/low supply. The following recommendations are from our local Peoria area chapter.

    RECOMMENDATIONS -

  • Use bright colors! Think neons, fun prints, and primary colors. These blankets are to be fun and spirit lifting.
  • Fleece is the #1 choice of children. Blizzard brand fleece is best choice for quality, softness and price.
  • Only do single layer fleece blankets. Double layered fleece is too thick and gets too hot. Fringe the edges, crochet a border or make a single layer quilt to dress it up. Cut off selvage edges
  • Fleece material 1 1/4 yard for yound child (birth -5/6); 1 1/2 yard for older children.
  • Make sure you cut off the selvage edge (or it doesn't show) on all blankets. It is on the manufacturer finished edges of fabric and a lot of times it is white. See picture to the right.
  • Quilt's are the #2 choice of children. Again, make sure to use bright; child friendly colors and prints.
  • Blankets sizes 40" x 45" to 45" x 50" are the recommended knit/crochet size.
  • Do not wash the blankets (do not prewash fabrics either). Perfumes, dyes, and other ingredients in your detergent and softner may agitate the recipients skin or nose.
  • Knitted and crocheted items must be closed weave meaning they do not have gaps between stitches and rows. See photos below.

CLOSED WEAVE (acceptable)                                  OPEN WEAVE (not acceptable)
Closed Crochet Weave                             Open Crochet Weave

On the Project Linus site they do have links to open weave patterns. Other chapters around the US accept them, however, our local chapter can not as the hospitals that receive to will not accept them.
